Everything You Need to Know About Vehicle Recalls
How to check your VIN, understand the risks, and get a free fix.
What Exactly is a Vehicle Recall?
A vehicle recall occurs when a manufacturer or a government safety agency (like the NHTSA in the US) determines that a vehicle or one of its components poses an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet federal minimum safety standards; something an auto repair shop can’t fix. Recalls can range from critical issues like faulty brakes or airbags to smaller compliance issues like incorrect labeling.
How to Check for Recalls on Your Vehicle
You won’t always receive a letter in the mail, which is why it’s crucial to proactively check for outstanding recalls, especially if you buy a used car. The easiest and most reliable way to check is online using your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Key Steps to Take Now:
- Locate Your VIN: The VIN is a 17-character code found on your dashboard (visible through the windshield) and on the driver’s side door jamb.
- Check the NHTSA Website: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides a free, public search tool. Entering your VIN here will show all unrepaired safety recalls on your vehicle.
- Monitor Mail and Email: Manufacturers are required by law to notify registered owners via mail when a safety recall is issued. Do not ignore these official notices.
- Look for Warning Signs: If your vehicle exhibits strange behavior—such as unexpected failure of lights, sticky ignition, or airbag warning lights—it may be related to an underlying safety defect.
The Crucial Cost Factor: The Fix is Always Free
If your vehicle has a safety recall, the manufacturer is legally required to cover the cost of the repair. You should never be asked to pay for parts or labor related to a safety recall.
For safety-critical recalls (e.g., brakes, steering, airbags), you must take your vehicle to an authorized dealership for the brand of your car, as they have the specialized parts and procedures required by the manufacturer.
